100 Story Studio

100StoryStudio_heroWant to write for children and young adults?

100 Story Studio is a series of full-day creative writing workshops, run on selected Saturdays at 100 Story Building. Award-winning and best-selling children’s and YA authors present workshops focusing on different aspects of the writing craft, and share their extensive experience of writing for young audiences. We also occasionally have industry insiders from the likes of Penguin Books and Hardie Grant Egmont sharing their knowledge – get in quick because those sessions book out fast!

All profits from 100 Story Studio go back to providing our free programs for children and young people from marginalised backgrounds.

Creative Writing Workshops

This year we’re running our 100 Story Studio workshops in collaboration with the fine folk at Faber Academy. Faber Academy was established by iconic London publishing house Faber and Faber to provide high quality, practical creative writing courses that draw participants into the epicentre of the book publishing world. The writing courses are devised and run by leading figures in contemporary publishing. In 2010, Faber Academy found a natural home with Australia’s award-winning publisher Allen & Unwin, and courses are offered in Sydney and Melbourne.

Elise Jones with guest Kim Kane

Saturday, 4 June 2016

10am-4pm, $295

This one-day workshop for aspiring authors will reveal how crucial the editing process is to your manuscript, both prior to submission and after you secure a publishing deal.

Led by Elise Jones, a Senior Editor of books for children and young adults at Allen & Unwin, the day will provide you with skills you can apply to your writing to give yourself the best possible chance of publication, as well as empowering you with an understanding of what you can expect from a professional editor. The course will focus on picture books, junior fiction and young adult fiction, and will also offer the opportunity to discuss the author–editor relationship with an experienced children’s book author.

Elise Jones is a Senior Editor of books for children and young adults. She has worked at Allen & Unwin, Australia’s biggest independent publisher, in one capacity or another since 2000, first assessing manuscripts and managing the submissions, then as an editor for the past nine years. Elise was the 2009 winner, with author Kim Kane, of the FAW Barbara Ramsden National Award for Excellence in Editing and completed the Residential Editorial Program at Varuna, the National Writers’ House, in 2014. Elise works with some of Australia’s best-known and best-loved children’s book authors and illustrators, including Leigh Hobbs, Roland Harvey, Freya Blackwood, Libby Gleeson, Andrew Joyner, Trace Balla, Craig Smith, Sofie Laguna, Elise Hurst, Kim Kane, Gabrielle Williams and many more.
