Kids Creative Workshop: Children of Bamiyan Valley

Sat 22 Aug 2-4pm

Free, but please book.

If you had a penpal in Afghanistan, what might they be telling you right now? Join 100 Story Building and poet Zakia Baig as we think on what life is like for children in a very different part of the world. Zakia will share her story and take you on a journey to the Bamiyan Valley, where we’ll use all our senses and the art of poetry to explore the stories of children we meet there. You can read Zakia’s poem here.

Zakia Baig arrived Australia in 2006 as an overseas student, and one among the thousands of Hazaras who left their homes to escape persecution in Pakistan and Afghanistan. A mother of two, Zakia is a Human rights activist and executive director of Australian Hazara Women’s Friendship Network.

Suggested age range 9–12.

Five Minute Story Slam

Tickets $22/$19

Story Peddlers presents our inaugural Five Minute Story Slam, hosted by 100 Story Building’s co-founder Lachlann Carter. Come along and listen to spoken word poet and radio presenter, Alicia Sometimes; storyteller and musician, Valanga Khoza; author and Moth storyteller, Kelly Link; actor and lawyer, Linda Rayment, and life-long puzzle-maker David Astle, battle it out for the title as Melbourne’s best Five Minute Story Slammer, or sign up for one of five open-mic positions to tell your own story, and go in the running for the title yourself – if you dare!

Sign up for an open mic position at www.peddlersinc.com. Storytellers receive free admission, plus a bottle of Story Peddler’s wine from Jamsheed Winery for competing.

All proceeds from this event go towards 100 Story Building’s centre for young writers.
