The Sound Of The Dark celebrated

In 2019, two grants by Gandel Philanthropy and Besen Family Foundation made our Early Harvest program and resulting publication The Sound Of The Dark possible. The impact has been amazing.

  • More than 500 children from Greater Dandenong participated in creative writing workshops

  • 15 young children became editors for the annual children's fiction book published as part of the program

  • Of more than 120 stories submitted by children, 14 were selected for publication in The Sound Of The Dark

  • 80 bookshops in Australia and New Zealand have stocked the book

  • AND NOW, The Sound of the Dark has been included in the Australian Book Designers Award 2020 longlist for Children's Fiction Book category

This children-produced book stands alongside some fantastic publications: Running With The Horses (publisher Penguin Books), Lizard's Tale (publisher Text Publishing), 52 Mondays and Funny Bones (publisher Allen & Unwin) among others.

To see The Sound Of The Dark nominated for this award has done wonders for the confidence and wellbeing our young editors and writers.

Thank you Gandel Philanthropy and Besen Family Foundation for your confidence in our program and the young editors.
