Otherwise is a collection of stories created by young writers, editors and illustrators through the Early Harvest program at 100 Story Building. Every world in this book is brand new: invented, drawn and mapped by young writers, editors and illustrators.

In 2026, five schools opened their Year 5 and 6 classrooms to a year-long creative writing expedition. With the support of our facilitators and curriculum-linked resources, a superb crew of teachers guided their students through brainstorming this year's theme, drafting, redrafting and finally submitting a story ready for the editors. Children's author Hilary Badger shared her insights into the craft along the way, then contributed an original story of her own, 'The Thought Factory', illustrated by Geraldine Buzzo.

Otherwise is launching 21st of November 2026. All pre-orders will be shipped post this date.

 About the Early Harvest program

Every year we publish a children’s fiction book as a part of our Early Harvest program. Each publication has a theme chosen by students in participating schools, and is put together by a team of young editors aged 10-12.

The young editors are mentored by publishing professionals throughout the process, but ultimately all the editorial decisions are made by them. They choose the title, commission stories and artworks, select and edit the stories submitted by young writers, write editorials and other features, and produce the book.

The contributors are young writers from the participating schools, plus usually a famous children’s author or two commissioned (and edited!) by the young editors. Award-winning authors who’ve contributed stories include Andy Griffiths, Alice Pung, Maxine Beneba Clarke, Davina Bell, Shaun Tan, Andrew McDonald, George Ivanoff, Morris Gleitzman, Amelia Mellor and Rhiannon Williams.
