Announcing Early Harvest 2016

They said it would never happen. They said we couldn't do it. They said it was ... impossible. 'They' being the young editors of this year's Early Harvest magazine. And actually, it IS impossible. The most Impossible issue of early harvest  will be published on Wednesday 9th November 2016.This fifth issue has, as always, been curated by a team of young editors (ages 10-12) who have spent 12 weeks simultaneously learning about publishing and making an issue of the magazine from scratch.The editors have pulled together a mind-bending collection of stories, quizzes and games around the theme of The Impossible.There are worms that are afraid of the dark, philosophical bunnies, mutant meatballs, shapeshifting creatures, a unicorn doing the latest dance craze and emojis that come to life!“I love that all of the editors had a say in the ‘impossible’ theme, and when we decided on it, it brought us closer as a team” – says Mary Troung, 11, one of the young editors.The magazine features a unique combination of stories from Australia’s leading authors and young writers from Melbourne’s west. Among the stories are new and exclusive works from bestselling children’s authors Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton (the Treehouse series, Pan Macmillan Australia) and award-winning author Alice Pung (Unpolished Gem, My Father’s Daughter, Laurinda, Black Inc).“To have famous authors and illustrators like Andy, Terry and Alice come to young Australian editors would feel surreal to anybody but I feel lucky it was us,” says Mary.The magazine also contains stories written by a host of students (and aspiring writers) from schools in Melbourne's west including Catholic Regional College St Albans, St Monica’s Catholic Primary School, Holy Eucharist Primary School, Footscray West Primary School, Footscray Primary School, Wembley Primary School and St John's Catholic School.The Early Harvest program brings together an editorial board of upper-primary students from from a wide range of backgrounds in Melbourne’s west, and provides them with mentoring and workshops to publish an issue of the annual literary magazineEarly Harvest.With advice from publishing professionals, students invite submissions, select authors, commission artists, edit stories, create illustration briefs and produce a literary magazine that showcases young, emerging writers alongside popular, award-winning authors and illustrators.The new issue of Early Harvest will be released on Wednesday 9th November. All profits go back to the running of 100 Story Building’s free literacy programs.
