SLEEPY heads get together

Recently, word reached us that a mysterious epidemic of Early Excited Powerful Yawns was sweeping through Tarneit P-9 College. The school was looking for ways to harness the power of these yawns and convert it into electric student engagement. So we consulted the experts on Level 23’s Planet of Best Monday Morning Ideas and set up a year-long Monday morning creative breakfast club for Year 1-4 students called SLEEPY (Student League of Early Excited Powerful Yawners). We worked with the teachers and a group of Year 8 and 9 students to design and facilitate creative programs for the club. Over the last two school terms, nearly 15-20 students have become regulars at the creative breakfast club, and the Year 8 and 9 mentors have, using their own initiative, taken on most of the planning and facilitation duties. Together, they have created strange characters, investigated mysterious happenings in the library and discovered their own top secret super-powers. The creative breakfast club is  part of a year-long Out of School Hours Learning Support Program at Tarneit P-9 College. It was delivered through the Refugee Education Support Program (RESP), a partnership between Centre for Multicultural Youth (CMY), Foundation House and the Department of Education and Training (DET).
